Vice President for Communications
As vice president for communications at Rose Community Foundation, Phil Nash oversees the Foundation’s publications, news media relations, and strategic communications related to grantmaking and program initiatives. He also serves on the Foundation’s Management Team.
Since 1976, Nash has been involved in Denver’s nonprofit and philanthropic community as a community organizer, nonprofit manager, free-lance journalist, and a communications professional. Prior to joining Rose Community Foundation, Nash owned and operated a consulting firm for several years specializing in philanthropic, nonprofit and public-sector communications. In addition to Rose Community Foundation, his clients included The City of Denver, The Denver Foundation, Gill Foundation, Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation, Women’s Foundation of Colorado, The Hunt Alternatives Fund and others. During 1998 and 1999, Nash was the principal contract writer of Denver Comprehensive Plan 2000, the City of Denver’s strategic plan for the early years of the 21st century.
From 1991 through 1995, Nash was manager of communications for Ambassador Swanee Hunt and The Hunt Alternatives Fund, her private family foundation. Nash’s responsibilities included speechwriting, publications, media relations and communications counsel to a prominent presidential appointee. In 1990 and 1991, Nash served as speechwriter and communications advisor to Denver Mayor Federico Peña, working closely with the mayor and his senior staff to communicate significant initiatives in progress including Denver International Airport, Colorado Convention Center, many neighborhood improvement projects, and economic development programs to revive the Denver economy.
From 1986 to 1990, Nash was manager of communications at The Denver Partnership (later named The Downtown Denver Partnership) where he was part of a professional team that planned the revitalization of Denver’s center city and advocated for significant public and private reinvestment along the 16th Street Mall, Lower Downtown and the Central Platte Valley. Prior to 1986, Nash worked as a free-lance journalist focusing on politics, business, travel and Denver’s neighborhoods. His work was published both locally and nationally.
A 1993 alumnus of the Denver Community Leadership Forum, Nash holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University and he pursued graduate work at the University of Michigan. He served on the Council on Foundations’ Media and Public Affairs Committee from 2002 to 2006, and has been a presenter on various communications topics at national philanthropic conferences. Nash has been involved in the startups of several nonprofit organizations and served on numerous boards of directors including the Colorado AIDS Project, the GLBT Community Center, Colorado Federation of the Arts and Community Shares of Colorado. He is the immediate past board chair of Metro Volunteers, the volunteer center serving the six-county Denver area. He has been a recipient of Denver’s Minoru Yasui Community Volunteer Award and the Human Rights Campaign/Colorado’s Paul Hunter Award. |
