How to Get Started
You know you want to give.
You are passionate about certain causes and issues, so where do you start? Begin by designing a philanthropic blueprint.
Here are some ideas to help you start by establishing the fundamentals.
Analyze your motivations.
- What do you care most about? Aging? Education? Health?
- What causes did you grow up with and remain connected to?
- What issues represent who you are and what you believe in?
- What kind of community improvements is your whole family passionate about?
- What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?
Explore how your motivations relate to affiliations and causes
addressing your interests.
Based on your motivations, determine how to connect your motivations with
causes such as: wide-scale problems (poverty), specific challenges (literacy),
institutions (hospitals), particular groups of people (elderly).
When you select a category based on your motivations, you can begin to focus on the direction you want to take with these causes.
Consider how you want to make a difference.
Different types of nonprofits have different approaches. Consider how
an organization tries to solve a problem, not just what the problem is
that they are trying to solve.
Determine your involvement.
- How do you want to invest your time and money?
- Number of gifts you would like to give (1 large gift or 100 small gifts)?
- Types of gifts (for general support or for specific projects)?
- Your level of involvement, (anonymous gift or hands-on involvement)?
- Evaluation of your impact (detailed outcome reports or progress updates)?
Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to give. Some people like to spread the wealth, others like to make one big impact. Some want to be directly involved while others want to stay behind the scenes.
